- [AAAA Record: How to Add IPv6 to Your Domain Safely](https://vserverhost.net/en/dns/aaaa-record-ipv6/): An AAAA record maps a hostname to an IPv6 address, the same way an A record maps it to IPv4. Add one only when the server is reachable on that IPv6 address, the firewall allows ports 80 and 443 over IPv6 and the web server listens on [::]. A broken AAAA record causes timeouts for IPv6 users and failed Let's Encrypt validations. - [CNAME vs A Record: Which One to Use and Where](https://vserverhost.net/en/dns/cname-vs-a-record/): Use an A record (plus AAAA) for the bare domain, because the zone apex also holds SOA, NS and usually MX records, and a CNAME can't coexist with other records. Use a CNAME for subdomains that should follow another name, such as www pointing at the apex or a subdomain pointing at a SaaS provider whose IP addresses may change. - [DNS Propagation Time: Calculate It Instead of Waiting 48h](https://vserverhost.net/en/dns/dns-propagation/): DNS propagation time is set by the TTL of the record you replaced: if the old A record had a TTL of 3600 seconds, every well-behaved resolver sees the new value within an hour. A brand-new name usually resolves immediately. Nameserver changes take longer because the TLD sets the delegation TTL, up to 48 hours for .com. - [DNS TTL: Sensible Values for A, MX and TXT Records](https://vserverhost.net/en/dns/dns-ttl/): DNS TTL (time to live) is the number of seconds a resolver may cache a record before asking the authoritative nameserver again. For stable A, AAAA and MX records, 3600 to 86400 seconds is normal. Before a planned change, lower the TTL to 300 at least one old TTL in advance, make the change, then raise it again. - [Point a Domain to Your Server: DNS Records, Not Forwarding](https://vserverhost.net/en/dns/point-domain-to-server/): To point a domain to your server, create an A record for the bare domain (@) with the server's public IPv4 address, add an AAAA record if the server has working IPv6, and point www at it with a CNAME or its own A record. Then configure a virtual host for the name on the server and issue a TLS certificate. - [Set an A Record: Fields, Zone File Syntax and dig Checks](https://vserverhost.net/en/dns/set-a-record/): To set an A record, open the DNS zone for your domain, choose type A, enter @ (or leave the name blank) for the bare domain or a label such as www for a subdomain, put the server's IPv4 address in the value field and pick a TTL such as 3600 seconds. Confirm it with dig example.com A +short against the authoritative nameserver. - [Let's Encrypt Certificate: certbot Setup, Renewal, Limits](https://vserverhost.net/en/tls-certificates/lets-encrypt-certificate/): To get a Let's Encrypt certificate on Debian or Ubuntu, install certbot with apt install certbot python3-certbot-nginx and run certbot --nginx -d example.com -d www.example.com. The domain must resolve to the server and port 80 must be open. A systemd timer renews it automatically, and certbot renew --dry-run confirms renewal works. - [Wildcard Certificate from Let's Encrypt via DNS-01](https://vserverhost.net/en/tls-certificates/wildcard-certificate/): Let's Encrypt issues a wildcard certificate for *.example.com only through the DNS-01 challenge: your ACME client publishes a TXT record at _acme-challenge.example.com with a token it receives. For automatic renewal the client needs write access to DNS, either through your DNS provider's API or by delegating _acme-challenge with a CNAME to a zone it controls. - [MX Record Setup for Your Own Mail Server (Postfix)](https://vserverhost.net/en/operations/mx-record-mail-server/): For an MX record setup, add a record of type MX on @ with a priority such as 10 and a hostname as the target, for example mail.example.com. That hostname needs its own A record, and AAAA if IPv6 works, pointing at the mail server. For mail that actually gets delivered you also need SPF, DKIM, DMARC and a matching PTR record. - [Reverse DNS PTR Record: Set It at Your Host, Not Registrar](https://vserverhost.net/en/operations/reverse-dns-ptr/): A reverse DNS PTR record maps an IP address back to a hostname, for example 192.0.2.25 to mail.example.com. It lives in the zone of whoever owns the IP block, which for a VPS is your hosting provider, and you set it in their control panel. For mail servers the hostname's A record must point back to the same IP. - [Reverse Proxy for Multiple Domains: nginx, Caddy, Traefik](https://vserverhost.net/en/operations/reverse-proxy-multiple-domains/): A reverse proxy for multiple domains is the only process listening on ports 80 and 443. It reads the hostname of each request and forwards it to the matching app, such as localhost:3000 or a Docker container. Every domain points to the same server IP with A and AAAA records. nginx uses one server block per site, Caddy one site block, Traefik labels on each container. - [Server Migration Without Downtime: TTL, rsync, Proxy](https://vserverhost.net/en/operations/server-migration-zero-downtime/): For a server migration without downtime, lower the TTL of the A and AAAA records to 300 seconds at least one old TTL in advance, build the new server alongside the old one and sync data with rsync. After testing with curl --resolve, switch DNS and turn the old server into a reverse proxy to the new one until traffic stops arriving. ## Optional - [Full text](https://vserverhost.net/llms-full.txt): Alle Artikel als Klartext - [Sitemap](https://vserverhost.net/sitemap.xml) - [betadomain.de](https://betadomain.de/llms.txt): Registrar mit Domain-API und MCP-Server
